First Act Discovery: Music to their Ears

Saturday 30 May 2009 @ 7:44 pm

When you come from a family of singer/songwriters, chances are pretty good your kids might have an interest in music. Such is the case for my children who were thrilled to try out instruments from First Act – the Little First Act Discovery Shake and Stack Instruments toy ($13) and First Act Discovery Mini Acoustic Guitar ($30).

My son has been playing little tunes (well, his four-year-old interpretations of tunes, that is) on his guitar since it arrived and my daughter just loves stacking up the animals, then crashing them down to play with the tambourine and maraca.

The guitar is sized perfectly to fit young players and it looks (and sounds) just like the real thing. Which means the real musicians in the family are also able to play for the children — a bonus, since so many other children’s instruments are dreadfully out of tune, whereas the First Act Discovery Mini Acoustic Guitar plays exactly like a real one. I’m thinking the musical aunts and uncles in my family had better clear some space on the stage for my kids. They’re surely going to be stars.

Victoria P. Zurcher Designs: Unique Personalized Gifts

Saturday 30 May 2009 @ 7:55 am

It’s summer, and with summer comes thirsty kiddos who don’t want warm juice in their sippy cups. So, what is a mom to do when faced with thirsty thirsty kids who want something other than warm juice? Well, how about a personalize water bottle? I recently had the opportunity to review a personalized aluminum water bottle from Victoria Zurcher Designsand I have to say that it is a great alternative to the plastic sippy we usually use. I received the personalized aluminum water bottle in the Orchid design with an “e” initial and the first thing I noticed was the fact that the design is very bright and colorful. The water bottle itself is light-weight, which surprised me since it is made out of metal, and it keeps drinks cool, especially when you add ice to it. One thing that I did notice was the fact that the outside sweats a little bit making a a bit hard to little hands to hold onto, but it’s quite easy to just wipe it off and you are ready to go.

I love the fact that I can put the personalized water bottle right into the dishwasher and I don’t have to worry about the design peeling or washing off (it’s totally dishwasher safe). Another thing to note is the fact that these water bottles are lead-free! Victoria Zurcher Designs also makes other types of cool personalized products including personalized plates, personalized lunch boxes, and personalized wipe off placemats. What’s my overall opinion? I think the personalized aluminum water bottles are a cute and useful accessory for any kid, especially a child who attends summer camp or school!

Enter to win a personalized aluminum water bottle with the design and personalization of your choice from the listed designs on their site by visiting the site and commenting back here with your favorite design.

Celeb Chef Stephanie Goldfarb Shares Grill Recipes Kids Will Love

Saturday 30 May 2009 @ 2:54 am
Stephanie Goldfarb

Memorial Day reigned in the official start of BBQ season and though mom and dad are usually open to grilling all sorts of meats and vegetables, most kids are strictly all about the hot dogs and hamburgers. How can you get them to experiment? We asked celebrity chef Stephanie Goldfarb who has cooked for celeb parents like Halle Berry, Ben Stiller, and Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith for healthier ideas that kids will love. She shared three great ideas for kids’ favorites that you can put on the grill.

Kabobs
“Kabobs are always a big hit with kids,” Stephanie says, because “kids love food on a stick.” (Who doesn’t?) Get creative: teriyaki chicken kabob for dinner, a fruit kabob for dessert.

Grilled Pizza
Stephanie told us, “We do a lot of grilled pizza for kids because it’s fun and they get to partake.  As an important note on this: the adult does the grilling.”

Buy store-bought dough (Stephanie recommends the one from Trader Joe’s but any will work). Then set up a station for the kids with sauce, cheese, and their favorite toppings like pepperoni, veggies, olives, etc.

  • Roll the dough out into individual sized pizzas.
  • Spray the grill with some olive oil so the pizza doughs won’t stick.
  • Grill the bottoms of the pizza doughs.
  • Remove the pizza doughs from the grill and have the kids top them with whatever they like.
  • Spray a cookie sheet with olive oil, put the pizzas on it, place the sheet on the grill and close the lid.
  • Cook the pizzas until the cheese is melted and the crust is crisp.

Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
Bring this childhood favorite outside!

  • Spread butter on two pieces of the kids’ favorite bread.
  • Take two slices of mild cheese and place them in the middle.
  • Spray a cookie sheet with olive oil.
  • Put the sandwiches on the cookie sheet.
  • Place the cookie sheet on the grill and close the lid.
  • After a minute or two, flip the sandwich.

Note: When using a nonstick pot or pan, ALWAYS have some fat (oil or butter) on the surface before the pot gets hot.  Otherwise the Teflon will release a toxin.
